International SEO: Hreflang, Localisation, and Multi-Country Strategy

International SEO is complex, but the payoff — unlocking organic traffic across multiple markets — is enormous. Here is the complete playbook.

URL Structure

Three options for international sites: ccTLDs (example.de), subdirectories (example.com/de/), or subdomains (de.example.com). Subdirectories are generally recommended — they inherit the domain authority of the root domain and are easier to maintain.

Hreflang Implementation

Hreflang tells Google which language/region version of a page to serve to which users. Implement hreflang as HTML link tags in the head or via the XML sitemap. Every hreflang must reference all other language variants reciprocally — missing reciprocal annotations are a common implementation error.

Localised Content

Machine translation is not enough. Hire native speakers to adapt content for local markets — not just translate, but localise. Local idioms, cultural references, and market-specific information all contribute to ranking in competitive local markets.
